ICAR AIEEA PG Agronomy Syllabus

Sub-Subject: Agronomy.

UNIT-I

Importance of agriculture; crop production; major crops; soils and NPK; cell biology; genetics; photosynthesis, respiration, photorespiration and transpiration; biomolecules; major pests and diseases; rural development programmes; agricultural research, education, extension and statistics.

UNIT-II

Principles and scope of agronomy; agricultural research institutes; agro-climatic zones; tillage; crop establishment and planting geometry; crop yield and ecological optima; organic farming; precision farming; integrated farming systems; field experimentation; crop ecology and adaptation; climate change; agro-ecological regions; GIS and GPS; weather and climate; atmosphere; solar radiation; temperature; humidity and weather forecasting.

UNIT-III

Origin, distribution, economic importance, soil and climate requirements, varieties, cultural practices and yield of cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fibre crops, sugar crops, fodder and forage crops, medicinal and aromatic plants and commercial crops.

UNIT-IV

Weed management; classification, biology and ecology of weeds; crop-weed competition; allelopathy; weed control; integrated weed management; herbicide classification, formulation, selectivity, resistance, persistence and application; weed flora shifts; problematic weeds; weed management in field crops.

UNIT-V

Water management; irrigation principles; water resources; irrigation requirement and scheduling; irrigation methods; measurement of irrigation water; water use efficiency; conjunctive use; irrigation water quality; water management in major field crops and agricultural drainage.

UNIT-VI

Soil fertility and fertilizer use; essential nutrients and deficiency symptoms; soil fertility and productivity indicators; fertilizer materials; slow-release fertilizers; nitrification inhibitors; fertilizer application; integrated nutrient management and site-specific nutrient management.

UNIT-VII

Dryland agronomy; dryland farming characteristics and constraints; drought and drought management; contingency crop planning; mid-season corrections; watershed management.

UNIT-VIII

Problem soils; distribution, characteristics and reclamation; crop production techniques in problem soils.

UNIT-IX

Sustainable agriculture; conservation agriculture; agri-industrial waste management; agroforestry; shifting cultivation; alternate land use systems; wasteland remediation.
